Boston Mayor Mayor Wu Addresses Trump's Threat to Relocate World Cup Matches from City
Boston's mayor, Mayor Wu, implied that the city was prepared for a dispute with US President Donald Trump over his claim that he could order FIFA to remove World Cup matches from the stadium in Foxborough, situated 22 miles southwest of the city.
Wu spoke on a Boston-based podcast this week to address comments from the Trump administration, which had described her as "radical left." Trump had threatened that he would contact the head of FIFA if Boston did not "improve its situation."
A great deal of it is secured by agreement so that no one, even the president, can change it.
Wu continued, "We're in a world where for drama, for power, for pushing the boundaries ... repeated warnings ... are directed at people and cities who stand their ground and comply or follow along to a divisive plan."
She further stated, "We will keep being who we are, and that means, unfortunately, we are going to be part of a discussion that is challenging what Boston stands for." Wu finished by stressing her support for the Boston, declaring, "Ten toes down for Boston."
The President's Comments and FIFA's Involvement
Earlier this week, Infantino was seen alongside President Trump at the international summit in Egypt. The FIFA president has also visited the Oval Office and presented World Cup tournament and club championship awards to the president as gifts.
On Tuesday, Trump was asked about recent disturbances in a Boston neighborhood that included a police vehicle being burned. Trump responded, "If things aren't handled well, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Gianni – the president of FIFA, who's phenomenal."
He added, "I'd tell him: 'Let's move into another location' and they would comply. He might not prefer it. But he would do it very easily." Trump also directly criticized Wu, stating, "Their mayor is not good ... she's far-left, and they're dominating some areas in Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"
Previous Threats and Upcoming Tournament Details
President Trump has made previous comments that he would have the similar discussion with the FIFA president about moving matches from other host cities, which are part of the 16 locations across North America.
The US is joint hosts the 2026 tournament with Mexico and Canada. The expanded tournament is scheduled to be played from June 11 to 19 July in the coming year.
